The IEV is a non- profit making entity, created in 1960 by a group of people from Valls resident in Barcelona, who then moved to the town of Valls. It figures in the Registre d'Entitats de la Generalitat de Catalunya and in the Registre de Voluntariat. It has also been recognised as a regional centre of studies since 1979. It also works with CSIC through the Confederación Española de Centros de Estudios Locales and is a founding member of the Coordinadora de Centres d'Estudis de Parla Catalana.

The objectives of the IEV include the study and spreading of history and local and regional news, not only through research, but also through the biographic and critical analysis of the people from Valls and the Alt Camp who stand out for their work. Other important objectives include the study and protection of the environment. We are also open to auditing, assessing and participating in activities linked to the research, cataloguing, and evaluation of the treasures of Valls and its region in the following fields: archaeology, history, science, economic and social; all in the name of preserving the local heritage. Similarly, this contribution to the development of regional culture motivates other work groups to organise conferences, seminars, courses, workshops, symposiums etc. and also to organise competitions to promote the research and preservation of the local heritage. The spreading of ideas and the publication of specialised works has always been one of the most important objectives of IEV since its beginnings; and we have always paid a great deal of attention to ensuring that all publications reach a minimum standard of scientific content without losing its appeal to the public. We should also point out the important role the IEV plays as assessors and consulters for local institutions, especially for Valls Council.

We are situated in the Old Sant Roc Hospital (1, Jaume Huguet Street, Valls). Throughout the years we have managed to breathe life into our headquarters by creating an atmosphere of group work and by organising a continuous series of events. As well as having a full time secretary service ( Monday to Friday, morning and afternoons), the Institut d'Estudis Vallencs also has a book and periodical library specialising in local and regional themes, a hall with a capacity of sixty people, two meeting rooms, a nature room, a photography laboratory and a room for the Comisión de Arqueología and its works. We also have two exhibition rooms (Sant Roc room and Sant Roc Chapel space dedicated to contemporary art). As the first phase of restoration work finalised in 1996, we now have a new indoor area, Sant Roc Patio, available for exhibitions and other activities.

The IEV is run by a General Assembly made up of honorific members, long standing members, and corporate members. This Assembly designates the entity's Directors Board to analyse any work done and to define the line to be taken in the future. To ensure everything works correctly, the Permanent Commission meets once a week to guarantee that agreements made with the Directors Board are carried out. Collaborating members and subscribers also form part of the IEV. The figure of Honorific Member is a title given to people or institutions who have collaborated with the entity in an outstanding way.
